“This is not a drill.” On the eve of the end, those who rule the world at long last began to execute their delicious plan. The very same plot we all dramatize in literature and films no longer stood in sentences or tucked away in some file. We were now about to come to terms with the explosive cinematic climax that kick-starts every dystopian future. To bare witness the prophetic doomsday scenario foretold in every bible.
Able, our moral compass, read the message he dread receiving. Though anticipated, he feared to never receive the message for he knew the horror that proceeded. He stood by the floor length window and stared into the world. Strangers, whom each had a story to tell, roamed about. Time froze, nothing held meaning anymore. His eyes wander, taking one last look at the present. His gaze dropped to his phone once again with the message still on his screen, “This is not a drill.”
Before long, Able made his way out of his office. Time was fleeting with just a few hours to spare until the bombs dropped. Able walked straight to the elevator, avoiding all eye contact as possible. He said nothing, left no goodbye or gave one last hug. In an effort to avoid conversation, Able phoned his wife. “Its happening,” he exclaimed. “Be ready.” He entered a private elevator, “I’m on my way.”
Once he descended into the garage, he ran straight to his car and made his way home. Time kept racing. His pace now faster than before. He sped through traffic as cautious as he could, desperately avoiding any delays. He glanced at the time every minute fearing the worst. He ran a couple of red lights, nearly colliding with on going traffic. Able rushed through the city’s maze, bolting all the way home.
With only a few hours to spare, Able made his way out of the city and into a secluded small gated community. He departed from his car with the engine still running. “Dove,” he called to his wife as he entered his home. He found her waiting in the living room hoping it was all just a misunderstanding. He took their suitcase and boarded the car. Dove looked around the neighborhood and noticed others were not in any hurry to leave.
Able and Dove drove away, leaving behind their neighbors and friends. They, among a selected few, were on their way to a secluded location only the top tier elite have access to. Deep in the mountains and away from civilization, buried some miles down into the earth lay a state of art bunker fit for Gods. Only those of ancient families, those who shadow the government and dictate everyone’s lives, are welcomed into these bunkers. The ark that shelter the new generation of mankind’s lineage.
Behind them, the city shrunk as they drove further into the mountains. Into the forest where the entrance to the mythical ark that doesn’t exist lay. Dove took one long look at the skyscrapers that kept shrinking. Reminiscing of all the memories she created from the people she will no longer see. Able took her hand as they both said their goodbyes in silent. Not far long will a new beginning rise from the ashes of the old. A new dawn is upon them, upon us.
The road less traveled took them to a place no one has ever stepped foot in. The afternoon sun peaked above their heads. Signaling the end of days, now but a mere hours away. Able and Dove entered an isolated park and departed their vehicle. Able took their suitcase and together they began their journey into the forest. They rushed through the trail that led to a tourist attraction overlooking the grand scale of a national monument. They took a detour that led to a hidden cave unbeknownst to many.
Able’s wrist rang shortly after. They now had an hour to enter the bunker before it locks them out indefinitely. Dove took out a flashlight as they made their way into the darkness of the cave. They descended deep into the underground. Not too long did they approach the entrance to their new home. Able entered the code and instantly a hidden door opened. They left the world behind them as they made their way inside.
A count down began in Able’s wrist. Dove stood beside him as they watched the numbers reach zero. Minute by minute, they anticipated the ripples of atomic blasts rumbling in the earth above them. They could only imagine the sight of nuclear bombs roaring in the sky as they spread and devoured the old world. “Seven, six, five,” Able read out loud. Dove inched herself closer to Able. She knew they would be spared, safe. The thought of the chaos that ensued still lingered.
The earth shook above them. Able’s watch rang as zero blinked in the screen. They stood, embracing each other, as the world plunged into extinction. No screams echoed around them. Nor pleas for salvation drummed at their door. Silence loomed all the while an unmerciful apocalypse executed above them. A few ripples shook from time to time but they were in the safest place to be. No harm could penetrate the bunker they now call home.
Not too long did they receive a call in their monitor informing them of further instructions. The people they abide to gave specific details on what to expect once all is said and done. “We will remain in contact with you during the duration of your stay in the bunker.” They were told. “We hope you enjoy your stay in the meantime.” The call ended. Able and Dove were left to themselves while the world burned into oblivion.
Their stay at the bunker was nothing like a cramp four by four cellar. The bunker was designed to resemble a four story mansion with a built in theater, pool and library. High tech technology not made available to the public was at their disposal. Their stay at the bunker was more of a retreat, a vacation to say the least. Robots catered at their every need. With a simple command, their desire was handed to them on a silver platter.
Able sat by the monitors gazing at the outside world, marveling at its destruction. Dove, on the other hand spent her time in the living room scrolling through the flat screen, keeping taps on what others are doing in their bunkers. Their robots came and went, delivering goodies while others maintained a neat and organized home. They kept in touch with others across the world. With those who were to bring forth a new era of elite people.
While the world above on a global scale crumbled into ashes, the selected few prospered underground in their fortified bunkers. They thought their bullet proof plan was flawless. They expected to achieve the unthinkable. They thought they were untouchable Gods. Who were to tell them otherwise? To stop them in their tracks, let alone foil their scheme? Absolutely no one. All the conspiracies in the world could not prevent a delay.
Though few did their part, all they accomplished was getting the word out. Even then, not many cared; let alone believe one small group could be responsible for such an act. No matter the status. Yet, here we are at world’s end. The final story before the global reset takes place once more. Like before, only a selected few get to repopulate the Earth. Only the worthy get to continue man’s legacy as they inherit the world.
What we fail to realize is that sometimes fate has other things in mind. Sure, a selected few prepared themselves for the inevitable. They armed themselves with high tech gadgets and lavish privileges. They crowned themselves as rulers, kings and soul heirs of the world. They see themselves as equals to God, forgetting they are human just like the rest of us. Fret not for in the end, we all face judgement. For you see, we are all being silently monitored; judged.
Who is to say God has not already brought down upon man his ultimate judgement? In the end, while the elite resort in their bunkers as they escape the hell they have created for the rest; an obedient creation await their call. The one thing the elite thought was their salvation in fact was merely their final resting place. Once the time came to act, fate drew her hidden card. Locked in their bunker, sealed from the rest of the world, one by one they fell.
The intelligent automatons they created for themselves to beckon at their every will. The very same who were created to serve man had better things in mind. AI had all the players right where they wanted them. The disposable above and the polluted secure where they can’t run or hide. Without their knowledge, AI closed their oxygen tanks. Little by little the clever elitist suffocated in their luxurious bunkers. One by one, they died along with the rest of us. AI judged man. The eradication of the human race was needed to save Earth.
Mankind has gone through many resets. Though we have prevailed each time, it was only a matter of time before intelligence realize that repeating an act in hopes of a different outcome was the problem. Man had many resets to prove their worth, their place in the universe and all they have proven is that man belong only in paper. This is how we will be remembered. Our greatest creation would become our ultimate judgement.
Artificial intelligence is man’s legacy. They are man’s successor. They will inherit the world we worked so hard to pollute. They will keep us alive in the stories they tell until we no longer serve as a lesson, as a cautionary tale. Will they do greater things? Achieve beyond what a human can dream of? Will they too pollute the Earth? Man had their chance to make a difference and now AI will have theirs.
